PollicIoT is born, the innovative solution that supports Alzheimer's patients and their families

  • 5 July 2018

Any health system must deal with the increased aging of the population, increasing health spending and the difficulty of ensuring quality and timeliness of care for all. These considerations also apply to our Region, which has an increasingly aging population: demographic projections predict a certain growth of over 65, which in thirty years could represent 1/3 of the residents (currently they are 26%, double the under 14).

There is also an increase in cases of senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease, with almost 20,000 cases currently registered in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In fact, dementia increases inexorably with the progressive aging of the population: at 65 it affects one in 100 people, 75 in one in 20 years and, after 85 years, one in three. It is therefore essential to find new solutions able to guarantee and assist this segment of the population with the support of technologies in order to cope with the increase in the request for assistance without triggering a corresponding increase in costs.

It is the example of PollicIoT, an innovative remote monitoring system for the patient born within the Friuli Innovazione network, thanks to the collaboration of companies and specialized subjects put in touch with each other by the Friulian business accelerator: Cimtech Srl of Reana del Rojale, Mipot Spa of Cormons, the partner of the University of Udine and the ASP Daniele Moro of Codroipo. Thanks to the constant support from Friuli Innovazione and co-funding from the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in the scope of the Por Fesr 2014-2020, they have succeeded in creating a unique system that allows a continuous control of the patient, from the family or the Care Giver. Applicable on a private or structural level, PollicIoT consists of a wearable device with sensors for identifying the patient's position and movements and a WEB platform, through which the Care Giver will be able in real time to locate the patient or receive alarm notifications in case of fall or exit from predefined perimeters.

PollicIoT will be officially presented at the conference "A solution dedicated to the assistance of Alzheimer's patients: technology meets the community" scheduled at Codroipo Thursday, July 12 at 15, at the Conference Hall of Banca Ter in Piazza Giardini.
