Display4Ships: the information on board the ship becomes wireless

  • 7 June 2018

Wireless, stand-alone and low-energy: these are the revolutionary features of display solutions for shipboard displays made, after 18 months of operation, by the Display4Ships project.

Co-financed by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region as part of the Por Fesr 2014-2020, Display4Ships involved Solari di Udine, a leading Friulian company in public information display systems, in industrial watchmaking and data collection systems, the Polytechnic engineering and architecture department (DPIA) of the University of Udine and Innov@ctors, spin-off of the University of Udine, which develops innovative products and technologies in the field of ICT and security. The winning network that led to the creation of Display4Ships has developed within the framework of Friuli Innovazione. As a business accelerator it has put Solari Spa in contact with numerous innovation projects with its established Innov@ctors and with the partner University of Udine.
Friuli Innovazione, a business accelerator with a ten-year experience in technological transfer actions and dissemination of the entrepreneurial culture and innovation, has also been involved in project coordination, dissemination and dissemination of the results of the Display4Ships project.

Display4Ships solutions are innovative because they are stand-alone, wireless and energy-efficient; they also integrate cutting-edge visualization technologies, low-power data communication systems, energy collection and storage systems and LED lighting modules. The solutions developed by Display4Ships are particularly useful both for ship boarding and for living areas, where information must always be updated and available in real time, especially for the management of any emergencies (with the diffusion, for example, of indications for evacuation), but also, in perspective, for proximity marketing.

In particular, the project focused on the development of two highly energy-efficient products for the naval sector: an indoor display system and an outdoor display system, both equipped with point-to-point and point-to-point connection infrastructure, and the necessary servers and management applications.
The combination of minimal energy consumption and applicability in various environments, both indoors and outdoors, opens up entirely new opportunities for information display systems. All of this is applied to the ship, a particular context for its critical environmental conditions.
