IGA Technology Services Srl was established in 2009 by the Institute of Applied Genomics to manage the consultancy/analysis activities on order.

IGA Technology Services Srl provides paid services in the following fields:

  • sequencing and re-sequencing of DNA and RNA;
  • production of genetic and physical maps;
  • genotyping ('fingerprinting') of individuals;
  • creation and management of genomic and cDNA libraries;
  • alignment on reference sequences and research on international data-bases;
  • data analysis with creation of customised and optimised treatment lines;
  • data storage, backup and remote access.

Among the listed activities, the re-sequencing services (NGS, Next Generation Sequencing) and the bioinformatics analyses associated with this activity represent the core business of the company, being high-tech activities, for which IGA SERVIZI has equipment and know-how that are not easily found in national competitors.

The introduction of second generation sequencers (NGS, Next Generation Sequencing) in 2007 and 2008 has revolutionised the activity of sequencing and genome analysis. Compared to the most powerful first generation sequencing machines that are capable of sequencing approximately 70,000 bases in a 1-hour cycle, the new machines can produce up to 0.4-40 billion bases with a sequencing cycle that lasts a few days, depending on the platform and the objectives. Efficiency is expected to grow again in the next few months/years (Table 1).

The demand for the production of these new sequences is very high, while the supply is very limited and, above all, the data management competences are often lacking (management of information flows and bioinformatic analysis of outputs).

In July 2008, IGA purchased one of these machines (Illumina/Solexa) and acquired and developed the entire IT support infrastructure (also accessible via the network) for data management. In one year of activity IGA accumulated considerable experience in machine operation and in data processing to the point where it was invited by Illumina to become a reference centre for Italy.
